As people age, their epidermal cells become less sticky and
that makes the skin noticeably thinner. When the skin becomes thinner, the
effectiveness of its barrier function decreases and releases moisture instead
of locking it in the skin. When this happens, the skin is more prone to dryness
and it is likely to lose its ability to repair itself.
Aging is a natural sequence of life, yet many of us can’t
face it gracefully. Grey hair, sagging skin and ugly wrinkles are by-products
of the aging process. Every one of us hates wrinkles and wish they would never
occur, but aging and wrinkled skin are inevitable. As despairing as it sounds,
there are solutions available to delay the advent of aging and wrinkles.
What Are Wrinkles?
Wrinkles refer to those thin and creased lines that appear on
the softer portions of our body like the face, neck and hands and results in
sagging skin due to decreased elasticity of the skin.
Wrinkles On Skin- How
Do They Form? (Are you susceptible to wrinkles?)
Along with the natural aging process, exposure to sun, wind
and environmental elements cause the appearance of wrinkles in many people over
a certain age. But there are others, who are more prone to the attack of
wrinkles at an early age because of genetic factors, lifestyle and behavioral
choices. Individuals exposed to UV radiation from sunlight, either due to their
profession or location of residence as well as smokers are especially prone to the
early development of wrinkles.
Individuals with lighter complexions experience premature
appearance of wrinkles, while those with darker complexions are less prone to
their development. Due to the larger presence of melanin, the skins of the
latter group suffer a reduced level of penetration of UV rays from sunlight.
Rapid weight loss over a short time span also may cause development of wrinkles
because of the loss of fat cells.
Free Radicals and the
Occurrence of Wrinkles
Free radical damage is considered one of the most vital
source of skin damage and appearance of wrinkles. These free radicals severely
harm the skin by breaking down the skins support structures. They diminish
elasticity of skin and the resilience of skin is lost and the aging process sets
in.
Antioxidants are meant to reduce the damage caused by free
radicals. When antioxidant protection is inadequate in our body, free radicals
cause damage. The activities of free radicals can be neutralized through
antioxidants abundant in vitamins A, C, and E, beta carotene, selenium, zinc
and more.
Thus by consuming foods and vitamins rich in antioxidants and
through the application of skin care products rich in antioxidants, you can
stall the process of wrinkling of skin.
When the dermal layer becomes thin, it produces less collagen
and elastin fibers. These cause wrinkles and make skin sag.
A small wrinkle on the young face creates fear of aging. As
we grow we get wrinkles. Most of us get wrinkles first and then rush to get
costly and painful treatments done to remove them. How about preventing them? I
agree that all of them cannot be probably stopped, but some can be for sure. Before
I share with you how to prevent wrinkles, let me tell you what causes wrinkles:
What
is the Main Cause Of Wrinkles?
You can also ask “what makes wrinkles worse?” and my answers
will be the same. There are many causes of wrinkles, but I will labor to lay
out some as follows:
Sun Damage
Aside from the ageing process, sun damage is also linked to
wrinkle formation. When the skin is exposed to sunlight for a long period of
time, it can result to dryness and it can damage the collagen fibers that
protect the skin. In addition, prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause skin
disorder and cancer.
One Sided Sleep
Sleep on one side for many years and your face on that side
will develop wrinkles. Can we not change our sleeping position after every few
days? Do that and find out. I turn around at least a couple of times every
night.
Smoking
Smoke and you will pull your muscles near the mouth. You will
develop the typical wrinkles of a smoker called smoker lines soon. Stop smoking
and stop that. Moreover, smoking also forms more free radicals that damage the
healthy collagen in the skin and make your skin sag with typical signs under
the eyes, cheeks etc.
UV Strike
Go out in the sun and let the UV strike your face. It will
damage the skin immediately. Your upper skin will become thin and the lower
supporting skin will become thin. This causes more wrinkles as the support goes
away from below and the skin sags.
Face Gestures
Make more gestures with your face and you will get the lines
that will become permanent forever after sometime. Make less gestures and
expressions with face and stop those wrinkles.
Is Your Diet Causing
Wrinkles?
Poor nutrition may not give your body the nutrients vital to
good skin health. The saying that “you are what you eat” is true even when it
comes to skin care.
Other Factors
Other factors of wrinkle formation are the following: stress,
sleep deprivation, alcohol or illegal drug consumption, and pollution.

Prevention tips
Natural ways to avoid
wrinkles on the skin
What reduces wrinkles on the face? That’s a question I
received from a 40 year old mother. I advised her not to just look at wrinkles
on face, wrinkles around mouth, wrinkles between eyebrows, wrinkles on forehead
or wrinkles on neck, but on the skin generally. I further advised her that the
best way to reduce wrinkles is in one word: PREVETION!
Prevention is better than cure and the time to embark on preventive
measures is now. My tips below should answer typical questions regarding how to
prevent wrinkles and here are some of the vital preventive tips for you:
Tip #1: Sun
Protection: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause serious skin damage.
Experts recommend the use of a hat when on the beach especially between
12nn-2pm. Use of sunscreen and sunglasses is also helpful to avoid wrinkles
that might appear around the eyes. You should avoid exposure to the scorching
heat of the sun. It is advisable to use sun packs when out in the sun. You can
also use sunglasses and an umbrella or wear a hat to protect your eyes and the
area around from getting exposed to harmful rays of the sun. Wear wide brimmed
hats, sunglasses and apply a sunscreen of SPF 15 regularly.
Tip #2: Quit
Smoking: Smoking is dangerous to your health and also to your skin. People
who smoke form wrinkles around their mouth earlier compared to non-smokers. To
keep your skin healthy, avoid the cigarette and smoky places like bars and
restaurants (passive smoking is equally detrimental to your health. Smoking is simply
not good for the skin. It roughens your skin and helps in the formation of
wrinkles. Smokers have double the risk of cell cancer than non-smokers.
Tip #3: Avoid
alcoholic Beverages. Alcohol consumption is bad for the skin. Alcohol
prevents the body from absorbing vitamins needed to keep the skin healthy.
Tip #4: Drink
Plenty Of Water.
Those of you who are serious about maintaining excellent
skin should drink plenty of water. Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
Water helps in keeping the skin glowing and healthy. It is an effective element
in reducing wrinkles, flushing toxins, fat, and other substances out of the
body.
In addition, when you need any other drink than water, take fruit
juices (unprocessed) and coconut milk. These beverages will keep your skin
moisturized and will thus leave it less prone to developing wrinkles and fine
lines. Since these drinks also aid in keeping many of your organs healthy, your
skin will look better than ever before. As many of us know, numerous internal
problems are reflected in our skin.
Tip #5: Use
olive oil as much as possible. It makes the skin soft and younger looking.
Tip #6: Resist
the urge to sunbathe. Experts agree that although tan makes men and women
look sexier, it can pose a threat to the skin. Try self-tanner instead. Never
use tanning bed or sunlamp. Use Sun block lotions every time you go out in the
sun.
Tip #7: Pamper
the skin once in a while by going to spa or sauna. This can do wonders on
the skin in no time.
Tip#8: Use
moisturizer twice every day.
Tip #9: Exercise
on a regular basis. You should do regular exercise as it is a proven fact
that exercise keeps you healthy and also you can sustain a healthy skin.
Exercise can also help you to quit smoking and will reduce your stress level.
In any of these cases, you will benefit by having a beautiful skin and a
healthy body. To help you further on exercise, you will find very handy our
article on Workout Without Equipment.
Tip #10: Don’t
wash your face too often. Washing your face more than once in a day may drain
out oil and moisture from the skin. Your skin may become scratchy and rough and
hence exposed to wrinkles.
Tip #11: Eat
healthy food. Healthy eating habits are non negotiable because, once again, “you
are what you eat”. Eat right and keep your body healthy in order to maintain
healthy skin. A good diet ensures that you are getting the right vitamins and
minerals. We frequently overlook the fact that sometimes, what takes place
inside of our bodies has a direct impact on what occurs on the surface of our
bodies, such as skin wrinkles. From the inside out, healthy skin begins. Our
diet-related information richly set out in our article Overnight Weight Loss will come in handy in your quest for good
skin care.
One should stick to a good diet full of Vitamins and
Nutrients beneficial for a healthy skin. Eat plenty of antioxidant rich fruits
and vegetables, including tomatoes every day. These contain nutrients that are
proven to make the skin look younger. In addition, nuts and beans are also good
food for the skin.
The more natural and fresh your food is the healthier your
skin will be.
Tip#12: Avoid
Caffeinated Drinks.
If you have any intentions of maintaining healthy,
wrinkle-free skin, you need to reform your body from the inside out. A good
start is refraining from drinking caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and
soda. Caffeine, an addictive substance contained in numerous beverages, removes
moisture from your skin. When your skin is dry, it is much more prone to
developing fine lines and wrinkles. Since caffeine also acts as a diuretic, it
also encourages more frequent urinations. These urinations contribute to the
depletion of moisture within your skin. Although you can re-moisturize your
skin using moisturizing lotions, we recommend tackling the problem from its
source.
We encourage everyone to start dumping their caffeine
beverages in lieu of healthier and less problematic drinks. The numerous
problems which stem from caffeine consumption are endless and are not worth the
hassle. If you are concerned about dumping caffeine all at once, we recommend
gradually reducing consumption until you are no longer dependent. At that
point, you can substitute your caffeinated drinks with healthier alternatives,
of which there is absolutely no shortage.
Good luck on your journey towards a caffeine (and wrinkle)
-free lifestyle!
Tip #13: Wear
protective clothing when you have to be in the sun. Some call them wrinkles
clothes or anti-wrinkles clothes.
Tip #14: Rest
Adequately. Your skin will look better if you get adequate sleep each
night—at least 8 hours. It's also crucial to get enough sleep because that's
when the growth hormone is active. Every cell in our body, including the skin
cell, is renewed by it. If you get enough sleep, your skin will appear younger
and more refreshed. This is one of the reasons why getting insufficient sleep
can shorten your life span.
Advice on getting a good night's sleep:
· Eat dinner no
later than two hours before going to bed.
· To avoid having
to get out of bed to use the bathroom, try drinking water no later than two
hours before bedtime.
· Sleep at the
same time every night.
· Keep long naps
away.
· Avoid coffee,
tea, and other caffeinated drinks.
· Sip a hot
herbal tea to relax.
· Before going to
bed, take a warm bath or shower.
Tip #15: Observe
Cleanliness: Bath regularly to get rid of any dirt, poisons and other
undesirable stuff from your skin. This
will then form a perfect and completely natural skin care routine that will
help maintain a healthy beautiful skin for a longer time.
Wrinkles cannot be avoided but they can be delayed. There is
nothing more satisfying than looking younger than ones age. So, just follow
these tips and stay young!
How
Do I Get Rid Of Wrinkles?
Wrinkles Treatment
NOTE: Always consult your physician first before implementing
any new diets, therapies and/or implementing any skin care regimen or procedures,
especially if you have existing skin conditions and/or are prone to rashes
and/or have sensitive skin and/or are allergic to certain ingredients that may
be included in any skin care formulations or are allergic to any components
natural or synthetic that may be mentioned.
There is more than one way to combat unwanted wrinkles and
creases on your skin, including wrinkles under eyes. Here are some vital ones:
Moisturizing Creams and
Sunscreen
Dermatologists are advising people who have few, shallow
wrinkles to use moisturizing creams and sunscreen. However, apart from these
creams, otherwise called wrinkles creams, more and more people are looking for
more advanced technology in in their efforts to erase the signs of ageing.
Botox
Recently, dermatologists responded to peoples request for
wrinkle treatment. Botox was introduced to soften wrinkles that are caused by
grimacing or squinting. Hyaluronic or collagen acid are injected on the skin to
elevate wrinkles.
Laser Treatment
Another breakthrough is laser treatment to minimize wrinkles.
The most common laser treatment is called Carbon Dioxide laser and it is
designed for deeper wrinkles.
Facelift (Surgical)
People who have deep, excessive wrinkles resort to face lift.
It is a surgical procedure that is both invasive and expensive that produces
excellent results.
Use antioxidant
Solutions.
Use moisturizers to stop skin from drying. Eat healthy food
full of Vitamins and antioxidants. Use formulations prepared for boosting
collagen production as you age. Take these preventive steps in your youth and
the old age may never come to show on your face. Avoid the costly and painful
procedures for getting the youth.
As mentioned above, typical creams and lotions rich in
antioxidants, vitamin A and retinol produce greater results in concealing
wrinkle lines.
Are
Natural skin care products the answer to all problems?
When it comes to skin care products, you will find that a lot
of people are very particular about using only natural skin care products. They
treat all the synthetic products as harmful to the skin.
So, are natural skin care products the answer to all of our
problems? What if a natural skin care product is not available for the
treatment of a particular skin disorder? Are the synthetic skin care products
so harmful that they should be banned?
Different people have different answers to these questions.
However, the reality is that due to presence of synthetic preservatives, its
really tough to find a natural skin care product that is 100% natural. There
are natural skin care products that have natural preservatives, but their cost
might be detrimental. Moreover, such natural skin products have a shorter shelf
life and hence are not preferred by the manufacturers of natural skin care
products.
Your selection of a natural skin care product should be based
on 3 factors:
* The skin type (dry, oily, normal, sensitive) of the person
who will use that natural skin care product
* The climatic conditions in which it will be used e.g. hot
and humid condition would warranty the use of oil-free natural skin care
products.
* The process for application/use of the natural skin care
product. A good natural skin care product (in fact any product) can seem
useless if not used in the proper way.
The
Best Skin Care Solutions
Self-Made Products:
You can also make natural skin care products by yourself, by
using the recipes that are readily available on the internet and in the books
at book stores.
Organic Fruits:
Use of organic fruits and vegetables is also popular as a
natural skin care procedure.
Essential Oils:
Some essential oils, herbal oils, are useful too and are
known for their moisturizing and antiseptic properties
Anti Aging Supplements
– Fight Wrinkles From Within:
Choosing antioxidants to supplement your regular skin routine
is an approach that has been validated scientifically. A study by French
scientists found that woman taking vitamin C, vitamin E, and betacarotene had
23% fewer new wrinkles, and a reduction in existing wrinkles of 8%.
Antioxidants stop the breakdown of collagen and elastin by free radicals.
Foods with the highest levels of antioxidants, as measured by
the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbence capacity), listed from the highest: prunes,
raisins, blueberries, kale, cranberries, spinach, raspberries, brussel sprouts,
plums and broccoli.
Vitamin A is another important nutrient for the skin. A
deficiency in vitamin A will reduce the effectiveness of skin treatments.
Vitamin A is needed for the normal growth and renewal of skin cells. Our skin
cells are constantly replacing each other, and new ones are pushed up to the
surface as the old ones slough off. Not only is vitamin A an antioxidant, but
it also nourishes the fat layer underneath the skin. Vitamin A keeps skin
supple, and may prevent skin damage.
Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency include dry and rough skin,
localized breakouts, fragile skin, wrinkle prone skin, poor skin texture, and
splitting nails.
One thing to remember with taking vitamin A supplements is
not to exceed the recommended daily dose, as it can build up in your body if
taken in excess. Taking 10000 IU per day is fine.
Vitamin C is another important beauty supplement. Not only
does it help in skin repair by building collagen, but lower levels of vitamin C
in the skin are associated with aging and UV damage. Taking 500mg to 2000mg per
day, in divided doses, is recommended.
An excellent antioxidant supplement to take is alpha lipoic
acid (ALA), especially if you’re taking the other antioxidant vitamins C and E,
and coenzyme Q10. Alpha lipoic acid is not only an antioxidant in its own
right, but it has the capacity to recycle these other antioxidants. Alpha
lipoic acid is also an anti-inflammatory agent, and improves insulin
resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with obesity and heart disease.
ALA increases the rate at which glucose is removed from the bloodstream, and
helps the body detoxify metals that have accumulated. Alpha lipoic acid also
prevents the cross linking of fibers, which leads to aging and the development
of wrinkles.
Alpha lipoic acid is produced by the body, but only in small
amounts. It is used by the cells in their production of cellular energy, and we
only benefit from its antioxidant effects if the amount of ALA in our bodies is
greater than that which our cells need for normal functioning. And,
unfortunately, the levels of ALA in our body decline as we age.
One advantage of alpha lipoic acid is that it is both fat and
water soluble. This means it can work in all parts of our body, making it very
versatile. Most antioxidants are either fat or water soluble, but not both. For
example, vitamin A is fat soluble, and vitamin C is water soluble.
Taking about 50 to 100mg of alpha lipoic acid supplements a
day has been suggested, though this supplement has not been tested on pregnant
or breast feeding women.
